Energy Loss from Crawlspace Ventilation

Imagine that during the summer, a homeowner attempts to air condition their home with all the windows cracked open about 4 inches.  Now imagine that during the winter, that same homeowner attempts to heat their home with all the windows cracked open about one inch.  The heating and cooling bills are likely to double, arent they? It doesn’t sound very energy effecient, does it?  The same could be said about how we treat our crawlspaces, except on a smaller scale.

Just like the example above, a home with a damp, vented crawlspace costs more to heat and cool. If your crawl space is vented, those vents make your floors cold upstairs. This is not only uncomfortable, but it costs more to heat your house.

Homes with dirt crawl spaces have damp air from the moisture intrusion of the ground and foundation walls. Crawlspace Venting in the summer brings in hot, humid air.  Damp air is more difficult to heat and cool, requiring more energy to do so, and this costs more money. Damp air puts more of a load on the HVAC system. If you get rid of the humidity from your crawl space, you save money on heating and cooling costs.

To prevent this energy loss, organizations such as Advanced Energy and the Department of Energy recommends an unventilated, sealed crawlspace such as our AmeriBrite Encapsulation System.  The Crawlspace Encapsulation System will eliminate moisture from the ground and foundation, and seal all of the outside air entering your home.

How much money you will save depends on the amount of vents you have in your foundation, the amount of moisture you have in your crawl, and the size of the crawlspace.  In some homes, you save anywhere from 15% to 35%! That’s a lot of savings, and over the years, it really adds up! You are paying for the cost of an encapsulation system each and every month in higher energy bills, by living in a house with a damp, vented crawl space.
